Since Tuesday pm I have been unable to connect to Internet Explorer (was fine Tues am) all I'm getting is 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage', as a result of this my AVG anti-virus can't get its updates.  I am still able to get onto my AOL as usual. 
Any/all suggestions gratefully received.

imo, download mozilla firefox, alot less memory hungry-so a lot quicker

also, check that you are working online thro internet tools

sounds like a half dead router to me

unplug the router for a minute and plug it back in, or try and do an update?

I'm up and running again - switching off router for half an hour seems to have done the trick.
